How the calculator works
We've tried to keep this honest rather than optimistic. The number you see is what a real Basildon commuter pays across a full year — not a cherry-picked off-peak fare.
Season ticket vs pay-as-you-go
If you commute 4 or 5 days a week, an annual c2c season ticket usually wins. At 3 days or fewer, the c2c SmartCard with daily/weekly caps tends to come out cheaper — we model it at ~90% of the per-day equivalent of an annual season ticket.
The Travelcard add-on
A standalone rail ticket only gets you to the station in central London. If you need the Tube, DLR or bus at the London end, add the Zone 1-2 Travelcard (~£1,200/year). Most Basildon commuters do.
Parking is the hidden cost
Basildon station parking is around £10.50/day; Laindon and Pitsea are closer to £9. An annual permit is better value once you park more than roughly 200 days a year — but there's often a waiting list.
220 working days a year
We assume 220 commuting days a year — that's 260 weekdays minus 28 days of annual leave and 8 bank holidays. If you travel on the days you work from home too, your real cost will sit higher.
